All meetings are at the Community Building STORM SEWER INFORMATION Background: There are two sewer systems in the village. One is for waste water from your homes and is under the direction of the Board of Public Affairs. The other system carries rain water out of the village into the river. There is no funding for this system. Problem: Our storm sewers were installed in the 1930's and earlier. They are made out of ceramic tile, stone and concrete. This is now posing two problems. One - the tiles have been deteriorating over time, collapsing and blocking the pipes. Two - the drains were put in before the dams were constructed and the river level has been raised. When the river floods it causes back flow into the sewers which adds to the flooding in the village. The entire system needs to be replaced. A planning grant has shown that the cost to do this would be in excess of 1.5 million dollars. Solution : The village has many areas of storm drainage problems. Financially, the only way to address this is to do repairs in small sections at a time starting at the rivers edge and workiing back up into the village. ME Engineering Company is assisting with identifying these areas, doiing the planning and helping with obtaining funding. Our immediate source of funding will be low interest loans. We will need a source of revenue to pay them off. Therefore, the Council has voted to establish a Storm Sewer Utility. A two dollar ($2.) monthly fee per water tap will be placed on the village utility bill. This Storm Sewer Fund will be a separate line item in the budget and administered by the Council under the guidance of the Building and Streets Committee. By establishing a fund, the village demonstrates a responsible pro-active approach to solving the serious drainage problems we now experience. With this fund in place, the village should be able to attract other sources of funding such as matching grants.
